 Effective cleaning Sep 05, 2010
Summary - great cleaning, a bit heavy. I have used this a couple of times so far. Came out better than the professional cleaning I had done 2 yrs ago.
Cleaning - use recommended amount of detergent (low sudsing) and the hottest tap water you can and this will clean very well. The first carpet I attacked was the family room which had not been deep cleaned in quite a while. The take-up tank was full of very dark brown water after the first pass. Did a second pass and it took up even more. Again, this carpet was pretty bad.
Rinse - There is no "rinse mode" but that doesn't matter. Just fill the tank with clean hot water, don't add any detergent, and guess what? Rinses. I did rinse also and after it dried it seemed to help the feel of the carpet.
Maintenance - I had none of the leaking issues mentioned. You just need to be sure to properly seat the tanks and everything is fine. Definitely take the 10 minutes to clean the machine after you have used it. The spin scrub brushes come out easily, remove them, rinse them well and pull out any trapped carpet fiber. I have a spray type sink faucet and that seems to do a great job in rinsing the take-up tank. There are a lot of reservoir type spaces in the tank and turning it upside down and spraying up at it seems to work well.
Water use - The tank covered about 80 sq ft but I used the clean surge feature, which also works well, quite a bit on this carpet. Otherwise probably a tank for a 10 x 10 area.
Suction drying - The carpet was damp when done (these were short pile carpets also) but dry within 4-6 hrs.
The only slight "negative" - it is a bit heavy but that seems to help keep the nozzle on the floor and help with suction.

Without question this is a 5 star product. It was easy to put together, easy to operate, and very light weight. The 12 amp power is a real plus. My 7 year old carpet looks like new! I had been cleaning it with a Dirt Devil carpet cleaner, but it had lost its mogo :0) I saw this amazing price on Amazon--which no one else could beat (not to mention free shipping), and I thought I would give it a try. So glad I did--the water in the tank was BLACK....thanks to our sweet dog Stella. Anyway, the bottom line is--you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I recently acquired a Pomeranian* pup without first doing the research about these cute and affectionate little bundles of destruction. One of the things we learned post facto was that this breed is especially challenging to housebreak. I had borrowed my neighbor's 6 year old Hoover SteamVac so much, that it hardly ever saw its home, so I decided the right thing to do would be to buy him a replacement machine. I've had especially good luck with refurbished units, so that's the direction I went. It arrived looking like new, and it works as well as a new machine, too. It removes poop and pee stains very nicely. This model of Steam Vac works great, and I make no hesitation in recommending one - especially for Pomeranian* owners.
Verdict:
Hoover SteamVac = Thumbs up
Pomeranian* puppy = Thumbs down
Berber carpet = Thumbs down
*German for "Satan's Little Lapdog"

I don't usuually do reviews but this product is so good I think I should let everyone know. Well made, easy to use, very effective, took all the dog urine smells out of the carpet and made them look like new. You won't be disappointed.

This cleaner is very easy to use and works well - It is a little heavy to move around but only when full of water (and if the tanks were smaller you'd have to keep refilling - so better to be heavy than have to refill every few mins. and I guess you could fill it half way if it was a big deal). The biggests downside is the brushes underneath. They are round spinners and the are are turned by one of the brushes so I'm waiting for that to break and the rotating brushes to stop working. Best part about the machine is the suction - it has a strong suction and leaves the carpet fairly dry.
